13 November 2006 Mod-ing cars could cause accidents

Police in York are trying to convince young drivers that modifying their cars could cause an accident. The campaign is being led by traffic sergeant Julian Pearson, who operates in York and Selby.

Many young drivers like modifying their cars in order to make the vehicles look better, but the changes could lead to the car becoming unsafe to drive.

Talking to the York Press, Sgt Pearson said that there was a definite tendency for young lads to modify their cars, for example by lowering their suspension, increasing the size of wheels or tinting windows.

Sgt Pearson continued: "In Selby, in the last few weeks, some cars have had light as low as three per cent. If you have only three per cent of light, will you see the cyclist next to you or the child?"

Sgt Pearson was also concerned that another risk drivers were taking was not alerting their car insurancecompanies of any changes they had made to their car.

If the vehicle is involved in a car accident and the insurance company was not informed of the modifications on the car, the insurance company could refuse to pay out any money.

Tony Dring, of Yorkshire-based road safety group Scarred, backed the campaign, saying: "If you have windows which are excessively tinted, there is no way you can see clearly what other road users are doing.

"While you might just get away with it during good sunshine and well-lit days, at this time of year with fog, poor visibility, and night coming down early, your chances of seeing pedestrians and other road users are seriously reduced."
