06 November 2006 Young drivers targeted during Road Safety Week
Road Safety Week, an initiative by road safety charity Brake, starts today and runs from November 6th to the 12th. The charity hopes the campaign will raise awareness and promote safety on Britain's roads.
The theme adopted by the campaign this year is young drivers. The theme is an important one to address since each year hundreds of drivers under the age of 25 are involved in an accident.
Research carried out by Break showed that in 2004, 151 car drivers aged 16-19 and 291 aged 20-29 were killed. It also confirmed that an 18-year-old driver is more than three times as likely to be involved in a crash as a 48-year-old and one in five new drivers will crash their car within the first year of driving.
The study also exposed the fact that young drivers are more likely to have caused accidents after speeding, drinking alcohol or taking drugs. Young drivers were also more likely to not wear seat belts, be bad at risk assessment and be more willing to take risks on the road.
Initiatives to raise awareness are happening across Britain this week in all sorts of ways including displaying banners, leaflets and stickers, putting on safety lectures in schools and town centres and handing out children's books.
Safer driving not only protects road users and those around them, it can also lead to drastic reductions on motorists' car insurance premiums.
