02 November 2006 GM makes a 'green' Hummer
It seems that even the mighty General Motors (GM) and its behemoth brand the Hummer are coming around to the eco-friendly way of thinking.
The latest in the Hummer brand is the H3 which GM claims is being made available in a Flexfuel version which runs on E85 ethanol-based bio-fuel.
The original V8 engine remains in place, but GM claims to have made the exterior more streamlined and the ride smoother, thanks to a new suspension that holds the car 50mm lower.
While not committing itself to any specific figures about fuel consumption, GM claims the 'green' version of H3 beats the standard H3's ratio of 20 miles to the gallon.
GM has not ignored the real reason people buy the Hummers however; not only does it retain the essential iconic looks of its predecessors, it also carries an enormous amount of safety equipment on board.
The H3 will feature the new sixth-generation OnStar hardware with digital and analogue coverage which includes upgraded hands-free voice recognition capabilities including more intuitive continuous digit dialling and improved voice recognition accuracy.
It also has inbuilt computer intelligence to tell the car whether a passenger is in the front seat or not and therefore whether to deploy an airbag in the case of an accident. No car is infallible however, so all motorists should make sure they have adequate car insurance.
