02 November 2006 Safety fears cause Alfa Romeo and Volvo recall
Car manufacturers Alfa Romeo and Volvo have been forced to recall over 6,000 cars between them because of problems with the cars' safety. The models affected are the Alfa 147, Alfa GT and Volvo S80.
Over 5,000 Alfa147 hatchback and Alfa GT coupes have been recalled after discovering a potential problem with the clutch. It has been discovered that the clip that secures the pin between the clutch cylinder and pedal can become detached and leave the car without clutch operation, which has the potential to cause extremely severe accidents.
Volvo has only had to recall 714 previous-generation S80 executive cars for checks on the cabin heater, but the consequences of a faulty cabin heater could be disastrous. Left alone, the system may short circuit, leading to the car battery draining which, in the worst case scenario, could cause a fire.
At the time of going to press, no incidents concerning these cars had occurred. If consumers think their car may be affected, they are advised to ensure they have adequate breakdown cover and to take the vehicle to their nearest dealer.
