30 October 2006 Brits build brilliant cars

A survey carried out by What Car? has revealed that half of the cars in the top ten for reliability were built in Britain. Japanese manufacturer Honda topped the reliability league table, closely followed by Lexus.

The British built cars included the Nissan Micra, ranked fifth, the Jaguar X-Type, positioned seventh, and the Mini, placed eighth. In contrast, Land Rover remained near the bottom of the league, with Renault also performing badly.

The reliability was assessed by looking at the nature of the repairs carried out on every model, including faults with the electrics, brakes and suspension and problems with the engine, transmission, or heating and cooling systems.

Reliability is an important factor in choosing a new car. The more reliable a car is, the less chance there is of the consumer having to call out for assistance with a breakdown, an occurrence which pushes up breakdown insurance premiums.

Approximately 38,000 vehicles were surveyed across 26 manufacturers and 111 models. The average age of the cars was 4.9 years.

Even the top ranking car, the Honda Civic, was built in Britain until 2002, meaning that some of the models looked at could well have been crafted by British hands.

What Car? commented that congratulations were due to the thousands of British workers responsible for building some of the most reliable cars on our roads today.
