27 October 2006 Speed camera fitter caught speeding

A Gatso speed camera fitter was left blushing in shame this week as he admitted to doing 76mph in a 50mph zone. Marjinder Singh Sagoo, 29, was caught while he was working near Mold, Flintshire.

Mr Sagoo travels 1,500 miles a week for his job and is responsible for installing and maintaining speed cameras in north Wales and north-west England.

The court heard how the defendant had received a telephone call from his pregnant wife, saying she felt unwell and in the effort to race back to Birmingham to be with her he had been caught speeding.

Mr Sagoo stated he appreciated this did not excuse his actions and was very embarrassed. He was given four penalty points on his licence and fined £235.

He did manage to maintain a small amount of dignity, since he at least was caught by a mobile speed camera and not one of his own.

Paul Smith, founder of the Safe Speed road safety campaign commented: "We're a nation of speeders, but we also have more or less the safest roads in the world. It's high time that the authorities saw the light and realised that penalising millions of responsible motorists effectively at random isn't delivering safety improvements."

"We need a system that helps people to take responsibility and drive safely not issue random fines irrespective of the safety of the situation," he added.

Motorists who are caught speeding can currently receive up to six points on their licence for each offence as well as fines. Driving convictions can prevent the motorist from some forms of employment as well as pushing up their car insurance premium.
