25 October 2006 Belfast treated to £5m road investment

Northern Ireland's capital is to receive a £5 million cash injection as part of the ongoing project to develop Belfast's infrastructure.

Belfast had previously received a £104 million designed to improve the M1/Westlink. This project is thought to be completed by 2009. Other schemes in the pipeline include the A1 Loughbrickland to Beech Hill and A1 Newry to Dundalk Link Road upgrades to make them into dual carriageways and the A5 Omagh Throughpass extension.

Dr Andrew Murray of Roads Service's eastern division, said: "In the last three years, some £735 million has been spent on developing and maintaining the road network across Northern Ireland - £495 million on road maintenance and £240 million on improvement schemes."

Dr Murray also commented on the planned improvement of the A55 outer ring road at Knock Road which had been identified following a public consultation. He said he hoped that the related statutory processes would begin within the next financial year.

It is hoped that the developments in the capital's infrastructure will provide a safer road network and prevent congestion, helping to maintain this high rate of growth.

Badly maintained roads can cause hundreds of pounds worth of damage to vehicles, affecting the chassis, suspension and tyres. Motorists are advised to have comprehensive or third party insurance.
