24 October 2006 How to prevent car break-ins – Chile style
Are you fed up of having your car broken in to? Has your car insurance policy gone sky high thanks to opportune burglars? Why not take a leaf out of Mr Geraldo's book and make your car so noticeable the thieves leave it alone?A Chilean cab driver, fed up with having his taxi cab broken into, came up with an ingenious way to put off would be burglars, reported Reuters today.
Juan Geraldo upholstered every inch of his car's interior with black and white spotted cowhides, including the steering wheel and the ceiling.
He then added stuffed toy cows and an interior neon light, before completing the design overhaul with a horn that moos.
"The effect was immediate. They haven't robbed me since," said Mr Geraldo. As an added bonus, the taxi's unusual decorations have made it increasingly popular. The extra clientele allowed him to expand his cab fleet from one car to nine.
Mr Geraldo said about 80 per cent of his clients are women and that he gets calls from television personalities, former government officials and for children's birthday parties.
Themed cabs could even go a step further and have any number of animals inspiring the designs: "Some would love the idea of a zebra cab or a lion cab," commented Mr Geraldo, who is currently trying to patent the idea before someone snaps it up.
