24 October 2006 Brits pour petrol down drains

Japanese car giant, Honda, has accused Brits of wasting petrol through bad driving. Honda is one of Energy Saving Trust's biggest supporters and a producer of 'green' hybrid cars.

Honda is encouraging drivers to adopt eco-driving techniques in order to make each journey more efficient – and less damaging to the environment. The main focus for this will be on Wednesday October 25th, 'Green Wheels Day'.

The announcement follows research carried out as part of the Energy Saving Trust's Energy Saving Week.

The survey revealed that 54 per cent of those polled did not turn off their engine when stuck in stationary traffic. Brits also admitted to carrying too much luggage and revving the car when stationary, all of which wastes petrol.

John Kingston, environment manager at Honda, said: "In the same way people might turn off the tap when brushing their teeth, drivers could switch off their engines when stuck in traffic.

"This could save them money, but more importantly, could reduce emissions and help the environment," he added.

Tips for saving the environment, as well as your cash, include checking your tyre pressure, checking your revs, keeping to speed limits and travelling light. These tips could also prevent car accidents and therefore keep your car insurance premiums low.

The Energy Saving Trust was also keen to dispel the myth that cars needed to 'warm up' in cold weather; in fact all modern cars are designed to drive off straight away.
