23 October 2006 Grayling champions greener cars

Shadow transport secretary Chris Grayling has said that investing in cleaner technologies will do more to help combat climate change than road pricing.

He would not completely write off the possibility that the Conservatives may have to implement road tax, however.

Speaking on Sky News he commented: "We're going to look at shifting the balance of taxation from things like jobs, employment, family taxes onto green taxes, and I'm pretty sure that come the next election we will have a package that visibly makes a change [in the direction of road pricing]."

He did raise the green issue however, stating: "I think much more important… is dealing with the nature of the technology in the cars on our roads; delivering greener cars on our roads.

"That, I think, will make a much quicker and much more important impact on the environment than road pricing," he stressed.

Mr Grayling's comments appeared during the same week that it emerged that the M25 was likely to become the first motorway with a toll charge as part of a pilot scheme to reduce congestion on the roads.

Worryingly for motorists, the Times newspaper claims that if the pilot proves successful a full implementation of the scheme could be in place by 2015, with about half of Britain's major roads charging by that time.

The spiralling costs of owning a car could be lessened if motorists choose cheaper car insurance.
