20 October 2006 Citroen greenest of them all
Car manufacturer Citroen can proudly claim to be the greenest car manufacturers after receiving the coveted GreenFleet Car Manufacturer of The Year award, ahead of runners-up Toyota and Honda. Vauxhall won three awards: they were named LCV manufacturer of the year as well as being voted top for their DualFuel Combo and the Astravan by judges.
Citroen are renowned for promoting the causes of fuel efficiency, greener fuel and lower emissions and have recently created a stir in the industry with their revolutionary Stop & Start technology, which switches the engine off when the car reaches a stand still.
Citroen also pioneered the fitting of self-regenerating particulate traps, which reduces levels of particle emissions to virtually immeasurable levels, and is available on a whole range of the company's latest diesel models.
Sarah Cowell, editor of GreenFleet magazine, praised the company, stating: "Citroen's policy of developing and marketing environmentally-friendly cars that are both practical and affordable played a major part in the company winning the GreenFleet Car Manufacturer of the Year."
While Britain's drivers are clearly becoming more environmentally focussed, cost is still a negative factor which puts motorists off, despite the fact that some car insurance companies are willing to offer incentives.
A recent survey conducted by the Centre for Economics and Business Research (cebr) has revealed that 73 per cent of drivers said they would only consider switching to a more eco-friendly car if it was cheaper to buy than their existing model, while 70 per cent would switch if it was cheaper to run.
