19 October 2006 Ayrshire car park award could benefit women's car insurance

Ayr Central car park has been awarded the Park Mark Safer Parking Scheme Award, part of a project organised by the British Parking Association in conjunction with the Association of Chief Police Officers.

The scheme is designed to promote and enhance safety within public car parks, with particular reference to lone female drivers. It is also hoped the scheme will reduce the risk of break-ins and auto-theft.

Stephanie Connelly, the centre manager for Ayr Central is proud of the fact her car park "can boast bright colour coded parking zones, strong lighting and unobstructed sightlines".

Ms Connelly was particularly proud of the fact that the car park was the first in Ayrshire to win the award.

With 500 car parking spaces underground, the car park is the largest commercial single level underground car park in the UK. The site is open for use by customers of the nearby shopping centre every day.

The increased level of security could help to protect the women's car insurance premiums of the high volume of shop-a-holic women who use the car park.

The BBC has discovered that car parks which have implemented measures to achieve the Secured Car Park Standard, including fitting better lighting and more advanced security, have reduced car crime by 70 per cent.
