18 October 2006 Drivers told there's no escape
Transport Scotland has announced that stories suggesting motorists can evade penalties for speeding by switching lanes are complete fabrication. It had been alleged that motorists could avoid detection on the stretch of road between Perth and Dundee by continually swapping lanes but a spokeswoman for Transport Scotland set the record straight when talking to the Evening Telegraph.
"It is inaccurate to state that people can avoid detection, and we look forward to the majority of motorists who use the A90 continuing to abide by the law by observing the speed limit," the spokeswoman said.
Tayside Safety Camera Partnership, the body responsible for the speed cameras in the area, angrily berated the weaving motorists for their reckless behaviour, and warned the drivers they could still face fines.
A spokeswoman for the firm explained: "The system is capable of enforcing in all lanes and in all directions.
"In addition, the A90 between Dundee and Perth continues to be enforced by mobile safety cameras and by Tayside Police's Western Division patrols."
The cameras measure the average speed of motorists along a stretch of road. They are designed to catch out drivers who speed up between cameras. If caught, drivers face a fine and three points on their driving licence and the inevitable hike in their car insurance.
