18 October 2006 WhizzGo impresses in York
WhizzGo, an innovative car firm, is celebrating the success of its base in York since its launch a month ago.The pay-as-you-drive car club originated in Leeds in July 2004. Its mission was to provide environmentally conscious drivers with an alternative way of using a motor vehicle without actually owning one.
The cars, all bought from local Citroen dealers in order to boost local businesses, can be driven for as little as £5 per hour, and once you've joined the club, you can pick up a car in any of the host cities.
The company also deals with the legal side and provides comprehensive car insurance although the size of the deposit for it differs depending on which city you drive in.
Clubs are already operating in London, Southampton, Brighton, Leeds, Liverpool and Newcastle, with a new base being added in Manchester this November.
Managing director and founder of WhizzGo Charlotte Morton, explains the concept behind the company: "The idea of WhizzGo is to encourage staff to come into work by public transport, by walking or cycling. A lot of people say they have to take their car to work to use it on the day. We have the answer to that."
Speaking to the Press newspaper, Ms Morton stated that she thought York had put a lot of effort into sustainable transport and that the centre had enjoyed "a very positive start".
