Motorists driving in unfamiliar territory may soon be able to drive without fear of unwittingly breaking the speed limit thanks to the latest technology.Siemens VDO has developed a system which can tell a driver of the speed restrictions that apply to the area they are in.
It works by using cameras to scan the road ahead for road signs and then relays the information to an onboard computer.
The computer will then alert the driver if he or she is breaking the speed limit, avoiding unnecessary speeding tickets which can lead to higher car insurance premiums.
Siemens VDO has also developed another system which could save thousands of lives every year.
It is designed to watch a driver's face and recognise when he or she falls asleep at the wheel.
Using an onboard camera, the system is able to detect eye and head movement and will emit an alarm when it thinks the driver has dozed off.
