13 October 2006 Truck drivers snap up safety guide

The Highways Agency has ordered a 40,000-copy reprint of a guide which enables lorry drivers to plan safer journeys.

The Truckstop Guide, which details over a hundred truckstops near motorways and major roads where drivers can take a break, has proved unexpectedly popular.

Highways Agency market research found ninety per cent of the target HGV driver audience thought the guide was useful and accessible.

The Highway Agency's chief highways engineer, Ginny Clarke, said: "It is encouraging that a government publication should become so popular."

The guide was originally designed to stop HGVs parking in non-designated areas by the roadside, with the increased risk of accidents cause for concern on humanitarian, policing and car insurance grounds.

Encouraging drivers to stop at assigned truckstops allows them to take sufficient rest and access relevant amenities.

Concerns around tiredness and road traffic accidents are acute for HGV drivers on long-haul journeys – in 2002, 524 HGV drivers were killed or seriously injured in accidents.

The Highways Agency is a government body responsible for construction and maintenance of all major roads in England as well as managing traffic to ensure safe travel for all road users.
