12 October 2006 Derbyshire reduces car crime
The Derbyshire Dales is now the area with the second-lowest car crime rate after a concerted effort by police.Car crime has been almost halved in the region in the last year with Operation Python being hailed as the reason for the success, reports Chesterfield Today.
Police figures show that 297 thefts from vehicles were reported between March and September in 2006, while during the same period in 2005, 490 offences were recorded.
"It is very pleasing to see this continual reduction in auto-crime and the extremely high detection figures," said chief inspector Pat Walker.
"It demonstrates what can be achieved through good police and partnership work."
The reduction in car crime is good news for residents and it also means car insurance claims have fallen in the past 12 months.
"The Derbyshire Dales now has the second lowest vehicle theft rate anywhere in England and Wales, at just one per 1,000 residents," said councillor Lewis Rose, chairman of Derbyshire Dales community safety partnership
"Only the Isles of Scilly have a lower rate."
