Drivers who inappropriately stop in the middle of a yellow box junction have come under fire from the Institute of Advanced Motoring (IAM).

There is no doubt that after a period of waiting, there is nothing more frustrating than seeing another driver take a chance and try to get across the junction.

Inevitably their attempts are futile and they become stranded in the yellow box, preventing other drivers from moving and bringing the yellow box system to a grinding halt.

The action is not only irritating but it is also illegal and can lead to offenders being punished and therefore affecting their car insurance premiums.

The IAM says many offenders adopt a tit-for-tat attitude, whereby they see others parking in the yellow box and follow suit.

Drivers are urged to show restraint and help to keep the system working by not getting in the way.

Even if a motorist finds him or herself slightly over the line it may be best to stay put, says the IAM.
