11 October 2006 Careless flick leads to worse charge

A driver who had got behind the wheel in Canada without car insurance has been caught via a stroke of luck.

The unnamed man flicked a cigarette out of his car window as he travelled along the highway in Sarnia, Ontario, reports website cnews.ca.

Unfortunately for the motorist his cigarette butt flew into the windscreen of a following police car, sending ash flying across the road.

The policeman turned on his siren and pulled the driver over where he was prepared to give the man a caution.

However, as the officer approached he noticed that there was a child in the back of the vehicle that was not restrained with a seatbelt.

On further investigation, it turned out the driver did not have car insurance and was banned from the road.

He was charged with driving with a suspended licence and failing to properly restrain a child.

If found guilty, the offender could face a fine of up to £2,400.
