11 October 2006 New law supports camera locators
Proposed new laws could see speeding motorists receive fines and penalty points which more closely reflect the severity of their crime. This could have a big impact on the car insurance premiums paid by some drivers as they may receive more points for travelling at greater speed.
The Road safety Act 2005 had its first reading in parliament on October 9th and the proposals also looked at the use of speed camera locators.
In fact, the GPS-based technology is fully endorsed by the act which states that they "compliment the government's policy to ensure that camera sites are visible and conspicuous to drivers, and so help deter excessive and inappropriate speeds on the roads".
The UK is set to see an increase in the number of speed cameras on its roads in the coming year and the company behind the first marketable speed camera locator, RoadPilot, says motorists should be warned.
"Our products are designed to aid road safety and protect the user's licence by making them more aware of their speed, by reminding them of prevailing speed limits and by giving advanced warning of potential changes to the traffic flow at speed camera locations," said James Flynn of RoadPilot.
