06 October 2006 Solar car to hit the market

A new era of environmentally friendly cars could be upon us very soon.

A Monaco-based car manufacturer has announced that its solar-powered car could be heading for a commercial release by the end of 2007, reports United Press International.

Venturi's eco-friendly contraption, named Eclectic, has been on display at the 2006 Paris Motor Show and the firm says it will initially produce 200 models.

The company then hopes to go into mass production, bringing the price down from a probable $35,500 (£19,000) to around $19,000 (£10,000).

The solar-powered cars may prove popular among drivers seeking cheaper car insurance, with the announcement this week that yesinsurance.co.uk will be offering cash back to people who drive green cars.

However, the Eclectic does have its problems and there are concerns that this might hinder sales.

The car is only capable of reaching 31mph and it has a distinct golf cart look about it, with no roof.

Despite this, the car meets European safety standards and Venturi is confident of a successful launch.

The company also has plans to release a second solar-powered vehicle in around two years time.

At present the Astrolab is just a concept car but production plans are in place and the vehicle is capable of reaching 75mph.
