04 October 2006 MP calls for all-Ireland road safety
A leading Sinn Fin politician has called for an "all-Ireland" road safety strategy. It is hoped that by introducing a system which applies to drivers both north and south of the Irish border roads on both sides will become safer and car insurance claims will fall.
A joint campaign has been launched in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland aimed at promoting child safety and seatbelt wearing, but Sinn Fin transport spokesperson Sen Crowe is calling for "further co-operation to culminate in an all-Ireland road safety strategy which will benefit everyone on the island of Ireland".
"While I welcome the fact that Minister for Transport Martin Cullen has been receptive in co-operating with his northern counterparts around the issue of road safety, progress seems painstakingly slow," said Mr Crowe.
He went on to say that the current divided system is not benefiting anyone and called for regulations in Northern Ireland and the Republic to be brought in line with each other.
"We need harmonisation of speed limits, road signs and all other road safety measures," he said.
"Lives can be saved with the implementation of an all-Ireland road safety strategy and the onus is on all authorities in the relevant jurisdictions to facilitate the necessary co-operation to bring this about."
