04 October 2006 Women not so safe drivers

Women have traditionally been considered safer drivers than men, but recent research suggests they are doing their best to quash that theory.

The number of female drivers that have points on their licence has more than doubled in the last three years and driving convictions are up as well, reports Reuters.

Traditionally female car insurance premiums are lower than those paid by men, but that could change if the convictions continue to rise.

"There are more professional women on the road than ever before," said Debra Williams, managing director of Confused.com, which conducted the research.

"Therefore, statistically, the chances of women incurring convictions are greater than in the past and they appear to be steadily on the increase."

Women aged 21 to 25 have seen the largest increase in convictions and Ms Williams pointed out that it could be this group that witnesses changes to their premiums.
