03 October 2006 Hybrid drivers get cashback
A new type of car insurance is being offered which will see people who drive environmentally friendly cars rewarded. The UK's first ever cashback scheme is being launched on October 3rd and is aimed at encouraging greener driving.
People who own a hybrid vehicle and take out a policy with online insurance provider yesinsurance.co.uk will be given a £40 cashback incentive.
Half of this money will go directly to the driver, while the other half will be donated to a carbon offsetting organisation called Climatesure.
"The cashback scheme forms part of a programme of activities which we hope will focus people's minds on the wider social implications of motoring," said Paul Purdy of yesinsurance.
"We believe we have a responsibility to help people minimise the impact that their motoring has on the environment.
"Motoring is a major contributor to carbon emissions and global warming and we want to help people reduce the amount of greenhouse gases that they produce.
"The move to reward drivers of hybrid vehicles is a first step. Longer-term we aim to broaden the scheme to include other types of fuel-efficient low-emission vehicles," he added.
Drivers of hybrid vehicles receive many benefits, including reduced car tax and immunity from London's congestion charge.
