A multi-million pound scheme to improve roads in Down, Northern Ireland, has been launched by the Roads Service. The scheme, which will improve safety and therefore reduce car insurance claims, was announced in front of Downs District Council on October 2nd.
Kevin Monaghan from the Roads Service Southern Division told the council that a number of projects had already been completed, but emphasised that more work was to be carried out as part of the £4.5 million scheme.
"Also programmed for this year are junction improvements at Magheraloan Road, Annacloy; provision of footways at Drumsnade Road near the primary school and at Magheraknock Road, Ballynahinch, near Langley Road," he said.
"In the last three years some £735 million has been spent on developing and maintaining the road network across Northern Ireland - £495 million on road maintenance and £240 million on capital improvements. This represents a huge investment."
Mr Monaghan spoke of visibility improvements which have already begun on some roads, as well as carriageway realignments on others.
