02 October 2006 New signs for M23

A series of new road signs are to be introduced on the M23 in a bid to reduce congestion and prevent accidents.

The new signs will display information about major road accidents and severe congestion, so as to offer drivers the chance to make decisions about the route they take.

It is hoped that the initiative will help to reduce the number of accidents on our roads and therefore car insurance claims.

As well as the signs, there will be more CCTV cameras positioned along the road and a number of roadside telephones will also be put in place.

"The new information signs will enable road users to make informed decisions during their journey in the event of incidents or traffic congestion affecting the route," said Robert Mackenzie from the Highways Agency.

Work has already begun on the project and is likely to continue for the next 12 months.

The Highways Agency has said that a 50mph speed limit will be in place at night and during the day on some occasions, with diversions also likely at times.

"We advise drivers to allow more time for their journeys, and thank them for their patience while the work is carried out," added Mr Mackenzie.

The work is taking place between junction eight and junction nine of the M23.
