26 September 2006 Clampdown on joyriding
The Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) is calling for more resources to launch a crackdown on joyriding in parts of Northern Ireland.SDLP Derry City councillor, Brenda Stevenson, has raised concerns over the number of joyriders currently driving "recklessly" through rural parts of the country.
"Joyriding is becoming a serious problem in rural areas," she said. "People are speeding recklessly, in their own cars through rural villages in the early hours of the mornings at the weekends.
"People in rural areas are unable to sleep at weekend nights because of the noise and fear of danger."
It is often the case that those who go joyriding do not have many of the required documents to be behind the wheel and, if they are involved in an accident, complications can occur if they have no car insurance.
Ms Stevenson went on to say that people living in rural areas of Northern Ireland know who the joyriders are, including the police, but resources are scarce.
"I have met with the police who have explained that they do not have the resources to tackle the problem and that at weekend nights they are concentrating their efforts in the city centre leaving inadequate policing in rural areas - this is not good enough," she said.
"The police are failing the people of the rural area. It is time for them to step up to the mark, do their duty, and take action against this regular, dangerous and seriously anti-social behaviour which will ultimately lead to tragedy."
