25 September 2006 Man charged over mother's death

A man has appeared in court charged with causing the death of a woman in Sunderland.

Alan Steel stands accused of death by dangerous driving, as well as charges of driving while disqualified, failing to stop at the scene of an accident, failing to report an incident and driving without car insurance.

Mother of one, Paula Stead, had sent a text message to her husband just two hours before she was knocked down, telling him that they had found a new family home.

Tragically that was the last communication between the two as Mrs Stead, her daughter Bridie and niece Danica, were hit by a 4x4.

Bridie, 11, suffered a broken arm and leg, while Danica, ten, has a permanently damaged foot and narrowly avoided having her leg amputated.

Police had spotted the vehicle, which Alan Steel is accused of driving, just moments before the accident, but will not reveal if the 4x4 was stolen.

Mr Steel will now appear before a judge at Newcastle Crown Court on Monday (October 2nd).
