21 September 2006 Autumn is peak time for car thieves
The next three months are the most popular for vehicle theft, according to a new report.
Research carried out by Norwich Union shows that September, October and November are the months when Brits are most likely to be a victim of car crime.
The survey was based on claims made to Norwich Union, which showed that although the number of cars stolen has decreased year on year, car thefts peak in autumn.
"The sustained increase in car theft over the autumn months can be attributed to a few key factors," says Nigel Bartram from Norwich Union.
"Most obvious is the shorter daylight hours – we all know that thieves prefer to work in the dark.
"And, after enjoying the summer evenings outdoors, many of us look forward to spending time indoors, which in many cases means we're not using our car as much in the evenings.
"We also see claims where cars have had pre-Christmas shopping in them – so the thief has made away with the car and Christmas gifts for friends and family," he adds.
Drivers are being warned to take extra precautions during the coming months if they want to avoid making a claim on their car insurance.
Simple steps, such as not leaving possessions on display and fitting an immobiliser, can prevent thieves from taking your car.
