20 September 2006 Nissan tests road safety system
Nissan Motor Co has announced that it will be trialling a new intelligent transportation system that could change the way we drive. The as yet unnamed system will be tested in Japan to see how well drivers take to it and if it proves popular it could be here in the UK in the years to come.
The system uses information gained from other vehicles and a series of roadside beacons to alert drivers to any possible dangers that lie ahead.
This means that if a car is heading towards a blind intersection and another vehicle is approaching at high speed, the system will alert the driver to the speeding vehicle by sounding a buzzer and a voice shouting: "Car approaching from left."
Drivers will also be alerted if they are speeding through a school zone and will be able to access a route planner.
It is hoped that the system will help to reduce accidents and, as a result, car insurance claims.
Nissan has set itself a target of reducing traffic fatalities and serious injuries in Japan by half by 2015 compared to the figures from 1995.
Tests on the new system will begin in October this year and are due to be completed in March 2009.
