19 September 2006 London crime falls
Latest figures show that between April and August of this year there has been an overall reduction in crime in London.
The capital's mayor, Ken Livingstone, has welcomed the statistics which show gun crime, racist crime and burglary have all been reduced dramatically.
"These figures are a testament that neighbourhood policing works," said the mayor.
"This is the first time for decades that the trend has reversed and seen a steady fall in crime in London and it is not in a small part due to putting police back on the beat, back on the streets and back in our communities."
In total, London saw 29,000 fewer crimes than for the same period last year and the figures suggest people in the capital are beginning to feel safer than they have for many years.
The number of murders committed in London is down by 21 per cent compared to last year, while racist crime fell by ten per cent.
Londoners can also feel more confident about not having to claim on their home insurance as burglaries were reduced by six per cent.
A recent survey by the Metropolitan Police Service found that 63 per cent of Londoners are satisfied with the service provided by their local police.
