18 September 2006 Bumper technology to save lives

A new piece of technology, which manufacturers claim will make cars safer, has been launched.

The Endura Frontal Protection System (EFPS) has been launched by Concept Mouldings with the aim of reducing injuries during car accidents and cutting car insurance claims.

EFPS works by covering the hard parts on the front of a vehicle with a plastic, energy absorbing barrier.

The importance of the innovation is being highlighted using statistics for European countries gathered by the Transport Research Laboratory.

They show that in the UK alone 900 pedestrians are killed every year, while the total for the entire continent is 12,000.

"This unacceptable level of carnage in Europe and also the rest of the world, where death and injury levels are even higher, can be reduced dramatically if we can just implement the technical solutions that are available today," said Ian Finney from Concept Mouldings.

"We currently have the capacity to make 200,000 units within a very short space of time so we just need the support of vehicle manufacturers to move this forward very quickly and start saving pedestrian lives."

Tests on the EFPS have already shown that pedestrian injuries can be reduced by up to 50 times on many large vehicles.
