14 September 2006 A sign of rural England
A number of campaign groups are expressing their concern that the number of countryside road markings and signs are ruining the natural beauty of some parts of the UK.In addition, there is also an argument that the removal of some of the markings could actually reduce the number of accidents on these roads.
The Campaign to Protect Rural England has lent its voice to the debate, stating that although safety is paramount, we may have reached a point where the number of signs is excessive.
Now the chairman of the Local Government Association has added his opinion, arguing in favour of reducing the number of countryside road signs and markings.
"Norfolk did some very interesting research about five years ago that showed the removing of white lines and road signs in some of the rural villages actually slowed down the traffic. But that wasn't accepted by the Department of Transport," Sandy Bruce-Lockhart told BBC Radio Four's Today programme.
However, Mr Bruce-Lockhart accepts that the issue is a complicated one as the government is keen to crackdown on speeding offences on rural roads.
