14 September 2006 Blind driver escapes jail

A man who was caught driving despite not having any eyes has managed to escape a prison sentence.

Omed Aziz, was found veering across the road by police, who upon stopping him discovered he had no eyes, two fingers missing, is partially deaf and suffers tremors in one of his legs.

Magistrates told Mr Aziz that he risked his life and the lives of others by getting behind the wheel as they felt his disabilities made it impossible for him to have full control of the car.

Despite endangering people's lives by driving without the use of his eyes and not holding a driving licence, MOT or car insurance
, Mr Aziz escaped a jail sentence.

He was instead given a 12-month jail sentence which is suspended for one year and has been suspended from driving for three years.

Mr Aziz was also ordered to pay £364 prosecution costs and has been told that if he does want to get a driving licence once his ban has expired he will need to take an extended test.

Sentencing was held up for some time as magistrates ordered Mr Aziz to change his T-shirt, claiming it was offensive.
