14 September 2006 Crackdown on driving law loopholes

A leading lawyer has predicted that a change to the legal system concerning the prosecution of people who commit driving offences will be a success.

New laws are to be introduced which mean death by dangerous driving will be put on the statute books.

This will make it easier to punish offenders and should lead to more convictions, and hopefully, fewer car insurance
claims.

At present, lawyers are given the difficult task of proving the charge of death by careless driving and a number of offenders have got off via loopholes in the law.

Nick Freeman, one of the UK's leading defence lawyers and a man often dubbed Mr Loophole for his ability to exploit flaws in the legal system, has stepped forward to say he supports the changes.

"I think the measures that have been announced today will probably reduce the number of acquittals; they should secure more convictions," he said on BBC Radio Four's Today programme.

Mr Freeman defended his record, saying that although there is a "moral ambiguity" over some of his cases, he blames "flaws in the law" for people getting off lightly.
