13 September 2006 Panic over child seat law
Public demand for information on the new child car seat law is reaching fever pitch. The new law is set to come into effect on September 18th and many drivers have not taken to the time to find out exactly what the rules are.
Police and local councils are said to have been inundated with requests for information as motorists fear they will be punished if they fail to adhere to the rules properly.
The law states that any child under the age of 12 or smaller than 1.35 metres must be in a booster seat when in a car.
If the car owner fails to follow the law, he or she will be given a £30 fixed penalty notice or a possible £500 fine if the case goes to court.
Kevin Clinton from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents says the surge for information is down to drivers putting the law to the back of their minds in recent months.
"A lot do seem to be leaving things until the last minute and we urge them to ensure they have the correct seats for their children's size and for their car," he said.
