12 September 2006 Drivers not keen on life-saving gadgets

Despite many new technologies being released which have the potential to save thousands of lives on our roads, the majority of drivers do not want to buy them.

Research by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) shows that most of the safety technology is only available at the top end of the market.

Innovations such as radar, ultrasonic and camera-based safety equipment is failing to appeal to drivers, even though the price of the equipment is falling.

"In the consumer market, education is critical to the uptake of obstacle detection systems," said David Alexander, senior analyst at the ABI.

"Widespread adoption is needed if we are to achieve a significant improvement in accident statistics. Car buyers need to learn more about how the technologies work, and to understand that they really will benefit from purchasing these systems."

Statistics show that by installing such technologies people could be saving thousands of pounds on their car insurance and the number of road deaths in Europe and the US could fall by as much as 40,000.

The ABI is calling upon manufacturers to work alongside the government to launch a huge public relations drive to highlight the importance of safety devices in cars.
