11 September 2006 Bus thief jailed for 2½ years
A man has been jailed after leading police on a two-hour chase when he stole a bus.Scott Cruickshank rammed police cars and narrowly missed pedestrians as he went on the rampage through Stirlingshire, Scotland.
The 26-year-old had previously been banned from driving an astonishing 21 times and had convictions for driving without car insurance before his latest escapade.
His most recent offence was not taken lightly by the courts and Cruickshank received a two-and-a-half-year jail sentence.
During the hearing police described Cruickshank's actions, saying he led them on a 50-mile chase, continued despite having his tyres blown out by a Stinger device and only came to a stop when the wheels of the bus became entangled in a farm fence.
When summing-up the judge said: "I have heard the narration and viewed the DVD and I am somewhat lost for words as to your actions that night."
Cruickshank's lawyer attempted to defend his client's actions by claiming the whole episode was the result of a mistake.
"His family were in Larbert and the bus depot is on the main road. He saw a bus outside on the road," said Martin Morrow.
"Out of curiosity, he got on because he saw the door was open and the key was in the ignition. He pressed a button and that seemed to cause the whole thing to start."
