08 September 2006 Crackdown on burglaries

A police force in the UK has launched a massive crackdown on burglars and is returning good results.

Kent police has launched Operation Castle which aims to tackle burglary and associated crimes in the county.

The results have been positive with 116 people being charged in the last nine weeks and 78 of those for breaking into homes.

Police are confident that the arrests they are making are having an impact on crime in the region, but they also call upon homeowners to do their bit if they want to see crime fall alongside home insurance premiums.

"Our officers are working hard to find out who the burglars are and we're then going out and arresting them," said chief superintendent John Molloy.

"We've found a significant amount of property too that we believe has been stolen. While we are doing everything we can to reduce the number of burglaries, householders can help us and help themselves too so the burglars don't.

"By taking a few simple steps you can keep your home safe," added Molloy.

Recent figures show that crime in Kent has fallen year-on-year and Molloy has a stark warning for any would-be burglars.

"If you're a burglar you won't make a dishonest living in Kent because we'll find you," he said.
