08 September 2006 Speed camera attacker jailed
A man has been jailed after he was caught trying to blow up a speed camera.Craig Moore lost his temper and his senses when the camera flashed him as he sped past in Manchester.
Concerned that he would have his driving licence suspended and would have to pay higher car insurance premiums in the future, the 28-year-old returned to the scene with thermite, which he used in his work as a welder, and attempted to exact revenge.
Unfortunately for Mr Moore his plan did not work out entirely how he expected and the camera recorded images of his attack.
"The defendant accepts that he has created a mountain out of a molehill by behaving stupidly," said defence lawyer Andrew Bailey.
"He finds himself in a great deal of trouble rather than the little deal of trouble he would have been in."
In fact, Mr Moore would not have been in any trouble at all as the camera he attacked was designed to warn motorists if they are speeding and is not used to catch offenders.
A light flashes to tell drivers to slow down and Mr Moore would have got away scot-free if he had not returned to vandalise the camera.
A judge at a Manchester court sentenced the 28-year-old from Doncaster to four months in jail.
