06 September 2006 Youngsters need road safety funding
The government must ensure that all children in England and Northern Ireland learn the basics of road safety. That is according to the head of campaigns for road safety charity Brake which says local councils should pay for youngsters to be educated.
At present, children in England and Northern Ireland are not guaranteed to receive funding for road safety education.
This is in contrast to the system in Wales and Scotland where all youngsters under the age of five learn road safety, with the council picking up the bill.
The hope is that by ensuring children are aware of road safety the number of accidents on our roads will be reduced and therefore the number of claims made to car insurance providers will also fall.
Cathy Keeler, head of campaigns at Brake, says the government needs to provide the funding sooner rather than later.
"We absolutely desperately need these resources," she told BBC One's Lunchtime News.
"The Scottish Executive have funded them in Scotland, the Welsh Assembly has funded them in Wales.
"Why should children in England be missing out?" she asked.
