05 September 2006 Blind man arrested for driving
A man has been found guilty of dangerous driving after he was caught behind the wheel despite having no eyes.Omed Aziz was stopped by police after he was seen veering from one side of the road to the other.
Mr Aziz was questioned before it became obvious to officers that the man was blind and should not have been driving.
PC Glyn Austin, who arrested the driver, was asked in court if he noticed anything about the suspect.
"I did," said PC Austin. "He didn't have any eyes.
"I attempted to speak to the driver. At that point the passenger leaned across and said 'He's blind'."
Both Mr Aziz and his passenger were arrested and it was when being questioned that the 31-year-old revealed the full extent of his disabilities.
As well as losing both of his eyes, he is also partially deaf, has lost a thumb and two fingers and suffers from leg tremors.
Mr Aziz had sustained the injuries when he was caught up in a bomb blast in Iraq.
The court found Mr Aziz, who had previously admitted driving without car insurance, tax or an MOT, guilty of dangerous driving. He will be sentenced next week.
