05 September 2006 Clampdown on road offenders

A zero tolerance approach to motorists who break the law could see cars seized and motorists imprisoned.

Those who do not have car insurance, a driving licence and road tax will be subject to the punishments in a scheme being launched in Harrow, north London.

Unmarked police vehicles are being placed around the borough, using automatic number plate recognition technology to catch criminals, reports the Harrow Times.

The scheme has already proved to be hugely successful, with five arrests being made within three hours of its launch.

"This sort of operation helps us to catch people driving without insurance straight away," said PC Dave Harrison, who launched the operation.

"There is a specialist bureau at Scotland Yard which also picks up the details of anyone pulled over to see if they are wanted for anything else."

One man has already been jailed for driving while disqualified as a direct result of the scheme, while at least one car has been seized and a £200 fine has been handed out.

The operation is expected to run for the next few months throughout the borough.
