04 September 2006 'A' pillars create third blind spot
Concerns are being raised over the structure of modern cars, with a particular safety feature being targeted for making driving more dangerous. The 'A' pillar, which divides the windscreen from the side windows, has become sturdier in recent years in a bid to improve the structure of the car as a whole.
This has led to car manufacturers making the pillars thicker which campaigners say has created a third blind spot.
Research has been carried out by Autoglass which shows the new pillars provide a lack of visibility of up to 4.5 metres, compared to older models where the blind spot is just 1.2 metres.
Drivers are being warned to take extra care when driving and scan the road ahead to avoid crashing and having to make a car insurance claim.
Motorists are warned to be particularly aware of cyclists, pedestrians and motorcyclists who can easily be hidden behind a pillar.
Manufacturers are aware of the problem and many are looking into alternative designs such as transparent pillars.
