01 September 2006 Young drivers more likely to have accidents

Owning adequate car insurance is particularly important for young male drivers in Wales, as these motorists are six times more likely to have a crash than older drivers.

According to statistics from the Welsh assembly government, men aged between 17 and 25 from the south Wales valleys or Anglesey are the most likely to be involved in an accident.

There were over 8,700 road accidents in Wales in 2005 and 41 per cent of these involved motorists aged 17 to 25. Some 12 per cent of these were either fatal or resulted in severe injuries, the BBC reports.

The total number of accidents has actually fallen, but this is due to a reduction in the number of people aged 25 or over being involved in crashes, as the number of people under this age having accidents has stayed the same.

Chief superintendent Geraint Anwyl, of north Wales police, described the situation as "terribly frustrating" and said that the police force sees the "needless waste of life on a weekly basis".

He added that effective campaigning was needed to get the message through to young drivers that they need to be more careful on the roads and not too confident in their own abilities.
