25 August 2006 Brits sleeping at the wheel
Almost half of Brits taking to the road this August Bank Holiday will be doing so while tired, according to a new study.Research by the British Coffee Association (BCA), road safety charity Brake and Local Authority Road Safety Officers Association has found that 44 per cent of drivers admit to being tired behind the wheel.
Statistics show that a shocking 300 people die each year in the UK as a result of drivers falling asleep at the wheel.
Motorists are being encouraged to plan their journeys properly and ensure they take plenty of breaks to avoid any incidents and claims on their car insurance.
"Driving when tired is a major cause of road crashes in the UK," says Dianne Ferreira from Brake.
"The best way to avoid this is to plan your journey for a time when you will be alert and ensure you have time for plenty of rest stops."
Recent related research on the subject found that the majority of drivers will continue their journey even if they feel tired and the consequences can be fatal.
One in ten crashes on Britain's roads are said to be caused by sleeping at the wheel, while those who snooze while driving are 50 per cent more likely to die or suffer serious injury in an accident.
