24 August 2006 Cloners cause van owner headache

A trader in Reigate is continually being hit with speeding and parking tickets worth hundreds of pounds after thieves cloned his van's number plates.

John Dunford, who owns Evergreen Kitchens, could see his car insurance
premiums shoot up as a result of the tickets which he is refusing to pay, reports icSurreyOnline.co.uk.

In addition to the speeding and parking tickets, Mr Dunford has also received congestion charge tickets and fines for failing to pay at a petrol station.

However, the 'exasperated' trader says he cannot have committed the crimes as his van has not left the yard for the past two years.

In addition, the vehicle no longer has any wheels, as they were stolen some eight months ago.

"I am not going to pay speeding and parking fines for my van, which has not moved for the past two years. Someone is committing offences by the day and nobody seems to be bothered about it," said Mr Dunford.

"I guess there will be more to come, but it is getting annoying that I have to keep writing to councils to tell them the situation.

"It is exasperating at the moment," he added.

Unfortunately for Mr Dunford he seems to be getting little help from authorities, with Bromley Council telling him to contact the DVLA and police, the DVLA saying it is a police matter, and the police saying it should be dealt with by the DVLA.
