24 August 2006 Drivers told to hide possessions
An operation has been launched by police in South Tyneside to cut car crime in the region.Operation Leftover aims to get drivers to stop leaving possessions lying in full view of potential thieves.
It is part of the authority's promise to reduce crime at all levels in the area and the scheme will involve officers spotting potential targets, taking down their registration number and sending them a letter with crime prevention advice.
"We want to help drivers by reminding them to keep their vehicles secure and this means removing all valuables out of sight. A similar campaign last year helped us reduce thefts from vehicles," said neighbourhood inspector Peter Sutton.
"This is one of several measures we are taking with our partners to reduce crime across the borough.
"Officers have also conducted operations including targeting those known to be involved in this type of crime and crime prevention roadshows," he added.
Last year's scheme proved to be very successful, with over 600 letters sent out and thefts from cars down by around 37 per cent, leading to fewer car insurance
claims.
