23 August 2006 Speeding campaign launched in Argyll

A campaign to warn companies and company drivers about the dangers of speeding has been launched in Argyll.

The Argyll and Bute Community Planning Partnership's "Drivesafe" campaign has sent packs to over 100 local firms, containing materials which can be used to ensure employees understand the need to keep to the speed limit.

Among the material provided are leaflets, dashboard stickers, speed limit posters and vehicle log sheets.

The aim of the scheme is to increase awareness, reduce speed, cut accidents and as a result bring down the number of car insurance claims.

"Speeding is reckoned to be a significant factor in around a third of all crashes involving death or serious injuries," said Councillor Allan Macaskill, chair of the Community Planning Partnership.

"Quite apart from the cost to life and limb, the effect of such crashes on other road users can be considerable – entailing road closures, delays and long detours.

"For a business, speeding can have other negative consequences such as increased fuel consumption, higher insurance premiums and drivers losing licences," he added.
