22 August 2006 Met chief 'complacent on crime'
Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair has come under fire for comments he made concerning reduced crime levels in London.Speaking on August 21st, Sir Ian claimed that increased police numbers have made people living in the London borough of Haringey feel safer.
"People are opening their doors, leaving their doors open, or leaving them unlocked, certainly, in a way they haven't done for 25 years," he said.
Now the chief of the Met is accused of being "complacent" and heeding "massaged" official crime statistics.
"Perhaps Sir Ian has been listening to too many official statistics on crime, almost all of which are now massaged to give the impression that the police are having a success which they are not," said Mail on Sunday columnist Peter Hitchens on BBC Radio Four's PM programme.
"If people like Sir Ian could stop being so complacent and look at what used to be done and how effective it was and compare it with the ineffective nature of their supposed intelligence-led policing, which is largely stupidity-led policing, then we might look forward to a day where we might be able to leave our door unlocked," he added.
Sir Ian Blair's comments have caused anger among many residents and experts while home owners are being warned that by leaving their front door open they may be rendering their home insurance
policy void.
